THE Visayas-Mindanao Interconnection Project is targeted to start construction by January 2019 and is targeted to finish by December 2020.
During the annual general membership meeting and partners forum of the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) last Friday, December 8, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) presented the updates for the upcoming Visayas-Mindanao Interconnection Project.
The entire project includes a 93-kilometers (km) overhead alternating current (AC) transmission line (TL), a 204-km overhead direct current (DC), and a 92-km DC submarine cable that would connect Cebu to Davao del Norte.
The submarine cable has an initial capacity of about 150 megawatts (MW) but will have a provision to increase its capacity of up to 900 MW.
Two Cable Terminal Stations (CTS) are targeted to be put up: (1) San Carlos, Southern Cebu and the other one (2) in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte. The CTS is a point where the transmission lines and the submarine cables are connected.
In Mindanao, from the Dapitan CTS, the line is expected to traverse to Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur (138 kv TL; 30 km) going to Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City (230 kv TL; 50 km).
The pre-construction phase of the interconnection project is expected to start December of this year and is targeted to finish by August of next year. (JPA)
