MOTORCYLE theft cases in Davao City have significantly increased compared to the same period last year, a police officer said.
Speaking during the first regular meeting of the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) on Tuesday at Grand Men Seng Hotel, Police Superintendent Angel Sumagaysay said the reason behind the decrease of crime solution is the sharp increase in motorcycle theft in the city.
“Our statistics for motornapping has really increased and we’re trying to decrease that one,” Sumagaysay said.
He noted that the motorcycle theft amplified during the election period from April to May.
Based on their data, DCPO posted 32 motorcycle theft cases in 2015 as compared to 107 for this year.
Police Senior Superintendent Michael John Dubria for his part said aside from the actual operation where they neutralized two suspects who were about to steal a motorcycle, he said they are intensifying their motorcycle inspection and monitoring to apprehend suspects.
“Continuous pa rin ang aming checkpoint operations regarding the reports of motorcycle theft,” he said.
The police chief cited one of their efforts is the program called “Oplan Sita” in the checkpoints wherein motorists are required to present their certificate of registration (CR) and official receipt (OR) to verify if they are authorized to drive the motorcycle.
In fact, he said on Monday they have recovered a motorcycle in Dumoy area which was left abandoned and is now under the custody of the police.
Meanwhile, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio lauded the accomplishment of DCPO for the decrease of crime volume from 11,436 last year and brought down to 9,032 which is 21 percent decreased in the same period from January to October.
“I hope that you will further exert effort to reduce the crime incidents particularly the petty crimes and the street crimes which is the common complaint of our residents here in the City,” she said.
She ordered anew the police to suppress petty and street crimes which are mostly the common complaints of the Dabawenyos especially during the Christmas season.
Dubria said this achievement was attributed to the intensified police monitoring and community engagement.
