THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has filed with the Department of Justice (DOJ) syndicated estafa and carnapping charges against the perpetrators of the car rental scheme dubbed "rent tangay."
Charges were filed on Wednesday against Rafaela Anunciacion, Anastacia Cauyan, Eliseo Cortez, Sabina Torrea, Bienvenido Cruz, and Marilou Vera Cruz.
The "rent tangay" perpetrators allegedly lured car owners to lend their vehicles with a promise of huge rental income. When the syndicate is already in possession of the car, they will eventually sell it without the owner's consent.
According to the NBI's investigation, Anunciacion and her group used the car rental business to commit the crime charged to them.
"It cannot be denied that Anunciacion and her cohorts used the said entity to carry out the illegal and unlawful act of misrepresenting to herein complaints that they are a legitimate investment/rent-a-car entity, wherein investments stand to earn a profit in only a short amount of time and car owners would earn guaranteed sums. Subjects capitalized on such ruse to the damage and prejudice of the complainant," NBI's complaint affidavit read.
"It can be seen that Anunciacion and her associates personally knew of the scheme because the same was actually designed by them. This would also prove that Anunciacion et al deliberately defrauded not only car owners but also investors who unbeknownst to them was infusing money in Anunciacion's schemes," it added.
The case against the suspects are based on complaints filed by 64 victims of the scam.
The complainants told the NBI agents that the syndicate lured them to lend-lease their cars in exchange for P20,000 to P50,000 rental pay.
Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre earlier said that the NBI's complaint will be consolidated with the previous complaint filed by the first batch of complainants: the PNP-Highway Patrol Group and victims of the scheme from Bulacan, Laguna, Angeles, Batangas and Nueva Ecija. (VoxPop Philippines)
