NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said Thursday people should just “wait and see” for developments that there could be no election in 2019 because of the shift to federal form of government being pushed by President Rodrigo Duterte.
Marañon refused to comment further as he said that everything about the supposed “no election” scenario is just speculation.
The governor said he has been supportive of the shift to federalism, however, there is no clear scenario yet on what model or version will be adopted in the country.
“There are several versions of federalism and it will take a lot of debates yet before the shift could happen,” he added.
Marañon also shared that he was against the 1987 Constitution and in fact, campaigned against it, but nobody listened because then President Corazon Aquino was so popular during that time.
“Federal government is acceptable and anything is possible under the sun", the governor said.
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III had said that the May 2019 midterm elections might not push through if the shift to federalism will happen.
