NEGROS Occidental-pride Mary Angeline Alcantara, a gold medalist in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa, will now carry the Philippine flag as she represents the country in the 3rd World Cadet Taekwondo Championships at Sharm El Shik, the United Arab Republic of Egypt from August 23 to 27.
Alcantara, a mainstay of Hanah Taekwondo gym, secured a slot to the world tournament when she finished with a bronze during the Asian Championships last June 6 to 8 in Vietnam after defeating Jordanian Tasneem Mohamad (21-2). She was an inch closer to the gold medal fight, but lost to Iranian Maryam Vasilehbar, 7-4 during the semis.
She is one of the eight jins of the national team that will leave Monday for Egypt.
Hanah coach Vic Feria said he is hopeful that they win and bring honor to the country.
“We've done the best we can to prepare her. All we need now is prayers that God will give us the victory. It’s not only for Angeline (Alcantara), but for the province, for the country, and everyone.”
