THE Department of Public Services (DPS) reminded the public to follow the Cebu City Government’s new garbage collection schedule that will take effect tomorrow, or they will be apprehended.
John Paul Gelasque of DPS said garbage in different areas in the city will be collected daily from 5 p.m. to midnight for the first shift, and from midnight to 7 a.m. for the second shift.
“I am asking the public not to leave their garbage on the road and in different designated areas starting 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. because we will not collect it,” he said.
More than 80 barangay environmental officers (BEO) will be deployed to apprehend those who will violate the scheme.
Gelasque said a barangay has at least three BEOs that will monitor those who will dump their waste outside the schedule.
BEOs in the mountain barangays will also help monitor the rural areas, Gelasque said, because there are no major concerns on collection in their areas.
The BEOs will keep an eye on areas where garbage are usually dumped.
Waste
Organic or biodegradable wastes like food leftovers, paper and leaves, among other others, will be collected every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Non-biodegradable wastes such as plastics, glass, metals and residual wastes like rags, diapers and sanitary napkins will be collected every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
The collection schedule for special wastes will still be determined by DPS, as it will be supervised by the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Special wastes include consumer electronics, cellular phones and busted lamps, among others.
Although the new schedule will already take effect tomorrow, Gelasque said that the apprehension of violators will start on Monday yet to give more time for the residents to adjust to the new scheme.
During the first two weeks, some DPS personnel will monitor and visit several areas, so they can immediately pick up uncollected garbage, particularly those along the major thoroughfares, he added.
