THE Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR)-Revenue Region 16 reported a total tax collection of P3.43 billion in revenues for the second quarter of this year, a 27 percent increase in collection made in the same period last year.

According to officials of National Economic Development Authority (Neda)-Northern Mindanao, the growth was broad-based with receipts from value-added tax (VAT) and other taxes registering higher than the average growth rates.

The collection from income taxes and VAT accounted for 91 percent share of total tax receipts.

All revenue districts posted positive growths led by Gingoog city and Cagayan de Oro city with growth rates of 41.4 percent and 30.9 percent, respectively.

Neda officials said the positive tax performance is attributed mainly to the bureau’s continuing surveillance on tax compliance of individuals and establishments as well as notification and closure of establishments in violating tax laws under Oplan Kandado.

In Cagayan de Oro, last April, BIR-Revenue Region 16 has ordered closed a home depot and a restaurant for under declaring their tax sales by about 300 percent in 2015.

The tax bureau has collected P800,000 from the home depot while an amount of P1.5 million was collected from the restaurant.

Two drugstores in the city were also shut down earlier this year while a restaurant in Ozamis City was closed down in the same month for a similar offense.

Also, in June, a famous deli shop was also padlocked temporarily for using an unregistered point-of-sale machine.

The BIR-Revenue Region 16 has also been strict in reminding the constituents to file their tax returns.
