Oro United FC wins bronze in Ceres Cup

THE hard-fighting Cagayan de Oro United Football Club (FC) Sunday recorded the best performance of a club in the prestigious Ceres Football Cup winning the bronze in the boys under-14 division held in football capital of the Philippines, Negros Occidental.

The Cagayan de Oro United kids had a rousing start in the elimination round up to the quarter finals only to falter in the semis of the 4th edition of the annual youth football competition organized by the country’s richest football club, Ceres-Negros FC at the Sta. Maria field in Talisay City.

The Mario Sumampong coached club and supported by CdU United FC officials, Charles and Menchu Dy, Jeff Co Cascara, Yves Tapalla, Mr. And Mrs. Marlon Casas, Regner Go, and Gadwin Gementiza finished the elimination round with three wins and one draw.

The Cagayan de Oro United kids were manned by Lyle Dy, Ino Butaslac, John Gementiza, Dave Mendoza, Zaca Olarte, JL and Mamat Cascara all from Rosevale School, Raffy Rubio and Josh Go of Corpus Christi High School.

They blanked Victorias City FC in their first match 4-0, and then whipped Kickers FC 6-0 in their second match.

They led in early against Barotac Nuevo 1-0 only to lose 1-2 in their third eliminations match. They then defeated Silay City FC 2-0 in their last slims match to secure their place in the quarters at the

The Oro kids then barged into the semis against a very strong Negros Island Selection when they won over Don Bosco Technology Center of Cebu (DBTC) 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

They then failed to advance to the championship when they bowed to the host Negros Island Selection 1-2 in the semis. They eventually won the third place trophy and bronze medals plus cash prize of P1,500 when they edged Cadiz City FC 3-2 in the shootout battle for third.

The Barotac Nuevo kids eventually won the gold medal when they edged the Negros kids in the final.
