AT LEAST 394 cases of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) coming from the Cordillera are being closely monitored by the Overseas Welfare Workers Administration (Owwa) in the region.
According to Owwa, these cases include contract violations, maltreatments, imprisonment and physical illness recorded from January to June this year.
According to Isaac Anthony of Owwa programs and services division, contract violation remains as the top problem face by OFWs where salaries agreed upon, work responsibilities, day-offs have not been honored by employers.
Most OFW contract violations are common in Middle East countries such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
In 2016, Owwa solved 881 cases of OFWs coming from the Cordillera region who were reportedly maltreated.
Owwa added less than 15 percent Cordilleran’s out of the 2.2 million OFWs leave the country annually.
