MALACAÑANG on Wednesday condoled with the victims of a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck central Mexico that resulted in the death of over 100 people.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Mexico, especially the bereaved families, who were hit and affected by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake," Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement.
The United States Geological Survey reported that the magnitude 7.1-magnitude devastating earthquake hit Mexico, located in the central state of Puebla, on September 19.
The earthquake struck on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 magnitude-8.0 earthquake that caused extensive damage to Mexico City that claimed as many as 10,000 lives.
It also came less than two weeks after an 8.1-magnitude quake killed at least 90 people and damaged thousands of homes.
Abella said the Philippine government, through the Philippine Embassy in Mexico City, was closely monitoring the situation in Mexico and keeping in touch with the leaders of the Filipino community there to ensure their safety.
As of press time, Abella said no Filipino casualty has been reported.
"The Philippine embassy in Mexico City has been damaged by the earthquake. All our embassy officials and staff are safe, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and they are continuously monitoring the situation and are in touch with the leaders of the Filipino community in Mexico to check the condition of our kababayans," Abella said.
"There has been no report of Filipino casualty as of this time," he added. (VoxPop Philippines)
