A SIMPLE and quiet commemoration of the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution does not mean the Duterte administration is giving it less importance, a Palace official said Tuesday.
Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra said the Edsa People Power Commission (EPPC) lined up a program that would be "simple enough but indicative of what we intend to do."
"[The simplicity] does not indicate that the present administration or the EPPC is giving any less significance to the celebration of the 31st anniversary," he added.
In a schedule sent to reporters, the four-day long commemoration will begin with a wreath-laying and military honor at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City on Wednesday.
It will then be followed by an open tour of Malacañang Museum on Thursday, which will start at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m.
On Friday, a holy mass and the annual Spirit of Edsa Foundation awarding will be held at the Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.
Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion, assigned as vice chair of EPPC, said the formal celebration of Edsa was scheduled on Friday.
"Moving forward, my vision is to see how we can continue to live on the spirit of Edsa, maybe in different forms. We can’t keep living on the past," Concepcion said.
Malacañang will just hold a wreath laying and flag raising at the People Power Monument in Edsa on Saturday.
Guevarra said the country needs to move forward and learn from the lessons of the past.
"It’s a time to settle down, to quiet a bit, and think of what has happened over the past 30 years. Do we still have that spirit of Edsa within our hearts? Have we done things that are supposed to guide us after that momentous event in our history?" Guevarra said. (VoxPop Philippines)
