MALACAÑANG welcomed Saturday the appointment of Korean-American Sung Kim as new United States (US) ambassador to the Philippines.
In a radio interview with state-run dzRB, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said it is “very significant” that the US appointed an Asian national, which he said is a positive sign that Americans want to be on “a better cultural footing and understanding between Asian.”
“It’s very significant that they chose and Asian and I’m sure they want to – I’m sure it’s some form of a signal that they want to be on a better cultural footing an understanding between Asian,” Abella said.
“That seems to be right now, one of the most obvious, one of the major significant reasons why they chose a Korean also. So perhaps, they want to understand us, that we’re able to relate on a better cultural terms,” he added.
Kim, who has been assigned to be the US ambassador to the Philippines, said he is “thrilled” to represent the US in the Philippines.
The Philippines and the US has been on equivocal terms after President Rodrigo Duterte repeatedly takes a swipe at the US for intervening in his deadly war on drugs. (Sunnex)
