FOR so long, our collective minds have been biased for, and conditioned to, western influence, especially toward the United States, which we considered our staunchest ally ever.
Not anymore. Today, we train our sights to other world markets, new partners new directions in foreign policy. Our President bats for an independent foreign policy, for to him our country can rise above our dependence on traditional dole-outs and aid.
Listen therefore to former Senate President and now prominent businessman Manny Villar: Now we have a President who has redirected our foreign policy in order to correct our "over dependence on traditional partners" and who has "underscored the independence of the Philippine's foreign policy and "broaden the horizons of friendship and cooperation with other nations."
The President's opening up to new directions in foreign policy is not limited to Russia and China as can be gleaned from his thrust to develop stronger relations with other European economies led by Germany, France and Great Britain.
It would not surprise us therefore if we reach out to other European countries like Norway, Sweden and Switzerland where our tie have not been strong and vibrant as those with our Asean neighbors.
On the issue of Russia, let us explore more opportunities like trade, investments and job opportunities. We have been in the dark for so long as far as Russia's potentials are concerned because we have been focused on Western interests for the same length of time. It's about time we changed directions and pivot to this former socialist economy.

The military authorities should seriously factor in the BIFF fighters and other private armed groups in its offensive efforts to exterminate terrorists in Mindanao.
