TRADITIONALLY, the Vice President of the Republic is just a person-in-waiting, although just a breath away from the presidency.
Normally, he or she is assigned a cabinet portfolio to keep him/her abreast with government affairs and functions.
Not with the current Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Gerona Robredo, widow of the late mayor and former Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo, who distinguished himself as the best mayor Naga City ever had.
Previously assigned as Housing Head, she later was barred from Cabinet meetings for reasons known only to President Duterte and his men.
She continues to be snubbed by the Duterte administration, the latest of which was the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council meeting, a very important one. Reportedly, she was not invited although the Constitution mandates that she be present during this legislative-executive council meeting.
Robredo is more than qualified to handle the position she was elected to. A lawyer and a former congresswoman, she has enough experience to meet the challenges of her office, plus her correct attitude towards the poor and the marginalized sector.
Robredo needs to be recognized, instead of being treated as a spare tire.
