THE statement of Jack Ma, co-founder and executive chairman of the Alibaba Group, on the "no good" Internet experience in the Philippines, should be a wake-up call to the telecommunication firms to improve their services, the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) said Thursday.
PCC Chairman Arsenio Balisacan, in a statement, said Ma's experience was similar to what the Filipinos have been suffering from all this time.
"This serves as a wake-up call on telecom companies to deliver on their promise a year after they have acquired the frequencies," he said.
"Indeed, the PCC believes that both industry and the government can implement ways to improve Internet speed," he said.
On PCC's part, Balisacan said its role is to foster competition in the telecom market.
"This means opening up the market to more players and leveling the playing field between incumbents and entrants, between big and small players. This translates to more choices, better quality, and affordable services to consumers," he said.
President Rodrigo Duterte earlier warned telecom companies that he would allow the entry of more foreign players in the country if they fail to improve their services.
Ma's comment on the Philippine Internet was made when he received a Doctor of Science in Technopreneurship, Honoris Causa from the De La Salle University on Wednesday.
