PH debt balloons to P6 trillion as of September

THE Philippine government's debt rose to P6.087 trillion as of end-September due to the depreciation of the peso against the US dollar, the Bureau of Treasury (BTr) said.

The September debt level was 1.8 percent or P106.65 billion higher from August level. Year-to-date, the government debt has increased by P132.14 billion or 2.2 percent.

The government's domestic debt amounted to P3.904 trillion, a P20.75 billion or 0.5 percent increment from the previous month.

"The growth in domestic debt portfolio was a combined effect of government securities net issuance amounting to P19.79 billion and upward adjustment in the peso value of onshore dollar securities by P0.96 billion due to peso depreciation," the Treasury said.

From end-2015 level, domestic debt has climbed by P20.07 billion or 0.5 percent.

The government's external debt climbed at P2.182 trillion, P85.90 billion or 4.1 percent higher compared to the end-August level.

"The month-on-month change was attributed to the depreciation of peso against US dollar (almost P2.00 depreciation) and third currencies that raised the peso value of US dollar and third-currency denominated idebtedness by P86.91 billion and P2.39 billion, respectively," the BTr said.

The external debt increased by P112.07 billion or 5.4 percent since the beginning of the year. (SDR/Sunnex)
