COINCIDING with the city’s Baguio Day festivities, the National Police Commission’s Regional office launched the observance of the National Crime Prevention Week at the Baguio Convention Center last week.
The launch was highlighted with the simultaneous blowing of horns by city officials, guests and participants to drumbeat the importance of crime prevention awareness of every community and the people, especially to students.
Lawyer Costa Joy Aliman of the National Police Commision (Napolcom)–Cordillera Administrative Region said the launch outlines the importance of the community and people’s support on “Pito Tayo Laban sa Krimen” program which seeks to provide specific mechanism for individual and communities in reducing the opportunities for offenders by enticing citizens to use whistle in attracting attention and preventing crime.
“The whistle is a good warning device, as it is audible at a greater distance than the human voice,” she added.
The Community Relations Office of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO-PCR) have lined up activities in support of the National Crime Prevention week annually observed in the first week of September by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 461 of former President Fidel Valdez Ramos.
BCPO-PCR head Superintendent Vic Orsino said that the major activities for the whole month of September, in observance of the event, would focus on the orientation of the Barangay Abuse Council, public safety symposium, the distribution of crime prevention materials and fliers, and the conduct of a security summit to ascertain the security program of the city.
Orsino explained their programs on drug surrenderers through the help of the Family Life Resource Center which provides modules as part of their rehabilitation process.
“Of the 2,367 surrenderers’, 300 individuals have graduated in the different FLRC programs before finally being reintegrated into to society. This aside from various financial assistance rewarded to some of them for livelihood assistance by the Regional and City social welfare department,” Orsino said.
He added the strengthening of their information dissemination campaign through the use of their social media platform and continuous community dialogues are their tools to achieve the maximum reach of vital information to the community. (Jonathan Llanes)
