DAVAO Light and Power Company (DLPC) switched on their submarine cable Thursday, December 22, reconnecting power supply in the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) after it had been relying on generator for energy source for nine months.
Last March 17, Igacos experienced total power outage after its submarine cable was hit by M/V Ecuador cargo vessel.
With the initiative of Igacos Mayor Al David Uy, the Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative (Daneco) was able to fully repair the said damage after nine months.
DLPC also already agreed that the submarine cable be reconnected since there is already an existing unused capacity in their Pampanga substation.
A few months before, Daneco had made the same reconnecting request to DLPC but could not be accommodated yet due to maximum load status of the substation during that time.
The damaged Daneco submarine cable is connected to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines transmission system which actually passes through DLPC's Pampanga substation.
Engineer Roger Velasco, however, said the incoming EVP and COO of DLPC, the repaired submarine cable reduced its capacity from five megawatts to three megawatts since Daneco said the cable already faces a lot of trouble and could not cater to bigger megawatts anymore.
Thus, Peñaplata and Kaputian in Samal will not be covered by the said submarine energy supply but will still rely on the generator as primary source of energy.
