THE Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) has recorded more damage to the province’s livestock and poultry sector as heavy rains that trigger floods in some portions of Negros Occidental continue.
PVO yesterday reported an additional damage worth almost P94,000, covering affected animal raisers in cities of Victorias and Bago, and towns of Pontevedra and San Enrique.
The figure was accounted for affected animals, including turkey, free-range chicken, carabao, native chicken and swine, mainly due to hypothermia and drowning, it added.
This will add to the earlier damage amounting to P1.86 million incurred by animal farmer-raisers in 16 localities in the province.
These are cities of Escalante, San Carlos, Sagay, Victorias, Talisay, Silay, Bago, and La Carlota, and towns of Salvador Benedicto, Toboso, Calatrava, San Enrique, Valladolid, Hinigaran, Pontevedra and La Castellana.
Bulk of the damage was noted among poultry animals like free-range chicken and gamefowl, which are highly-vulnerable to low temperature.
Other affected animals are swine, goat and carabao also due to drowning, PVO had said.
All in all, the initial damage of heavy monsoon rains to local livestock and poultry sector amounted to almost P2 million already.
PVO said it might still increase as the province continues to experience bad weather thus, it urged local animal raisers to implement necessary mitigation measures to lessen possible adverse effects of calamities.
During rainy season, respiratory diseases are normally affecting poultry animals while ruminants or plant-eating animals are suffering from internal parasites.
PVO advised raisers to provide enough food and supplement as well as comfortable and safe shelter to animals.
