THE Bacolod City Council approved a resolution requesting the City Engineer’s Office to consider the rehabilitation of satellite markets in Barangays Felisa, Handumanan, Granada, and Mansilingan.
The resolution authored by Councilor Bartolome Orola, chairperson of committee on markets and slaughterhouse, was approved during the regular session last Wednesday.
The resolution stated that Section 9, Article 16 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution provides that the State shall protect consumers from trade malpractices and from substandard or hazardous products.
Toward these ends, the State shall maintain a farm-to-fork food safety regulatory system that ensures a high level of food safety, promotes fair trade and advances the global competitiveness of Philippine foods and food products, it added.
Orola said the four satellite markets, built 20 years ago, are now in disarray.
“We need to rehabilitate these markets to ensure the safety of consumers and to avoid untoward incidents,” he said.
Orola recommended improving the lighting, ventilation, drainage, signage, floor and wall finishes.
He also said the City Government should also assist the stall holders to improve their business viability by providing customer service training and organizing promotion activities, and to improve and maintain a high standard cleanliness in the satellite markets to attract customers. (MAP)
