THE closest living replica of the first Philippine flag, which was unfurled in Cavite on June 12, 1898 by the late President Emilio Aguinaldo, is on display at a mall in Baguio City until June 17, 2017.
The structure, in which the flag is displayed, is also a replica of Aguinaldo’s house in Kawit, Cavite - the place the original flag was raised as proclamation of the country’s independence from Spanish colonial rule.
During the unveiling of the flag replica at SM City Baguio, Emilio Aguinaldo Suntay III, the great grandson General Aguinaldo, stressed the importance of commemorating the country’s Independence Day.
“The flag speaks of glorious stories and languages and in overcoming the challenges to our nation. And we, as stewards of the flag, are here to share you the stories,” Suntay said.
This is the second time the replica is displayed in public. It was first shown during the centennial celebration of the Philippine Independence in 1998.
The replica has been stored in the Emilio Aguinaldo Museum in Baguio City, the same place the original first Philippine flag is kept.
In 1998, the General Emilio Aguinaldo Foundation Inc., commissioned the University of the Philippines to examine, study and replicate the first Philippine flag.
