THROUGH the years, Samulco exists to improve the living condition of its members through excellent savings, credit, and allied services. It has evolved to be an open, community-based cooperative with semi-banking and grocery store operations.
By 1988, the credit cooperative amended its by-laws and transformed itself into a multipurpose cooperative with assets reaching P10 million.
Samulco also started working towards responding to the need of the coop members for housing facilities. In 1994, the cooperative acquired a 48,208-square-meter land in Mintal which was converted into a 235-lot residential subdivision complete with roads, drainage system, street lights and water supply.
When Fr. Paul Cunanan entered the coop as one of the Board of Directors, Samulco was organized as a Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) which led to its divine nature enrichment. This opened opportunities for spiritual enrichment to all officers, employees and member.
It is within this decade when Samulco acquired additional properties including buildings and equipments, among others.
The cooperative, by 1995, offered a scholarship program supporting an initial of 13 high school scholars. Some cooperatives and other institutions here and abroad also visited Samulco to learn about its best practices.
In 1996, Samulco’s Mutual Benefit System was created as an added benefit for all members and their dependents from 6 to 55 years old.
On the same year, Samulco’s members reached the 9,000 mark. As it inaugurated its new building in 1997, its consolidated assets also reached P133.5 million.
