CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- In line with the celebration of Nutrition Month, the City Government of San Fernando, through its City Agriculture and Veterinary Office, hosted the “Kamote and Tilapia Cooking Festival” last Wednesday.
Officials and residents from ten villages in the city who are considered as nutritionally depressed village participated in the said activity.
Each team showcased their skills in cooking main dishes, side dishes and desserts by using kamote and tilapia as the main ingredients.
City Agriculturist Cristina Sangumay said the activity seeks to promote awareness and encourage everyone especially the mothers of the malnourished children to cook and prepare nutritious yet affordable meals.
“Sa pamamagitan nito, sana mahikayat natin ang ating mga nanay na maghain ng masusustansyang pagkain para wala ng batang malnourished sa San Fernando,” (We are encouraging our mothers to cook healthy food so there will be no more malnourished children in San Fernando) Sangumay said.
Sangumay also stressed that kamote (sweet potato) and tilapia are rich in vitamin B6 and C that are very beneficial to one’s health.
“Kaya naman malaking tulong ito para sa mga bata upang sila ay maging malusog (These give high nutritional value for the children to make them healthy),” Sangumay added.
Mayor Edwin Santiago said good nutrition is the key to having a healthy lifestyle. He encouraged the Fernandinos to eat nutritious foods because he believes that prosperity comes to a community with a healthy citizenry.
“Dito sa syudad, mahalaga na ang bawat isa ay malusog lalo na ang mga bata. Dahil ang malusog na Fernandino ay siyang tulay sa pagkakaroon ng masagana at maunlad na syudad,” Santiago said.
Bulaon village was hailed as first place in the cooking festival followed by Del Carmen village (second place) and San Pedro village (third place). The winners received cash prizes and certificates of participation. (PR)
