CITY of San Fernando Vice Mayor Jimmy Lazatin on Tuesday, August 29, highlighted the need for moral courage during the city's celebration of National Heroes Day at Heroes Hall.
Heroes Hall, named in honor of local and national heroes, plays host to a park where monuments of heroes are enshrined. The city has been active in honoring the memory of heroes and promoting their heroic virtues. Local heroes have found places of honor in the park.
But instead of the usual wreath offerings each year, Lazatin said that it would be better to honor the memories of heroes with the sincere dedication to live a life of freedom through sincere action.
"The challenge is up for all of us. Our country continually calls for individuals who manifest physical but more importantly moral courage during these demanding times in our history. We can start with our homes by instilling good values to our children," Lazatin told attendees that included students, government officials and sectoral representatives.
"We can do it in our respective places by promoting camaraderie and becoming mabuti, magaling at malasakit sa kapwa in our school, business and workplace,” he added.
“Our act need not be grandiose, it just needs to be noble no matter how small it is. Because the waves we see in the seas did not start big, it started with small ripples. The big trees we have did not start tall, they started with tiny seeds. All of our small but noble deeds put together will cause impact and change that we all long for," Lazatin said.
Lazatin's said that while the country is free, the Filipino society is still suffering from new kinds of oppression. He said that the Filipino people should now free themselves from the oppression brought by poverty, marginalization and political immaturity.
He added that across the country are still communities languishing in poverty.
"Poverty is also the cause of an intellectually immature society," Lazatin said.
He added that the city has been advocating to reduce the number of people in the poverty level. He said that support programs have been in place during his term as councilor for the education sector of the city.
