THE Senate began its investigation Thursday on the killing of Albuera town Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. inside his cell in Leyte last November 5.
Espinosa was killed in his cell at the Leyte Sub-Provincial Jail by members of the Philippine National Police-Criminal Detection and Investigation Group (PNP-CIDG) of Eastern Visayas Region.
CIDG-Eastern Visayas Director Marvin Marcos and Police Chief Inspector Leo Laraga, who led the CIDG team that raided Espinosa’s cell, were among the police officials invited to the hearing.
The hearing is headed by Senate committee on public order and dangerous drugs chairperson Senator Panfilo Lacson.
The CIDG operatives earlier said they killed Espinosa and another inmate Raul Yap out of self defense. The investigators in the case, however, are looking into the possibility that the execution was due to Espinosa's knowledge on illegal drug trade.
Espinosa was arrested for possession of illegal drugs and firearms last September, while his son, suspected drug lord Kerwin Espinosa, was arrested in Abu Dhabi last October 17. (DDA/Sunnex)
