THE Senate committee on sports chaired by Senator Manny Pacquiao is set to probe into the alleged P129.6 million in unliquidated funds given by the Philippine Sports Commission to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the National Sports Association from year 2010 up to 2016.
The investigation will also look into the P129,000 the PSC paid when it hosted a party for former Asian Games Medalist Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski, after she was appointed by the International Olympic Committee as OIC representative to the Philippines.
PSC Commissioner and former basketball star Ramon Fernandez questioned why the PSC spent such a big amount for a private party for Cojuangco Jaworski.
Cojuangco-Jaworski is the daughter of Jose Cojuangco Jr. and the wife of former Pasig Representative Robert Dudot Jaworski.
The hearing is scheduled on November 22, which will be attended by PSC Chairman William Ramirez who during the budget hearing confirmed that he will be present to shed light on the issue.
POC leadership led by Cojuangco Jr. will also be formally invited to the hearing.
Senator Juan Edgardo Angara filed a resolution urging the
Pacquiao's committee to conduct the necessary investigation on why
POC Commission on Elections had disqualified boxing Chief Ricky Vargas from running as president in the POC election, which will be held on November 19 at the Wack Wack Gold and Country Club in Mandaluyong City.
Angara said he was surprised that these things are happening as he deplored the unjust imposition of eligibility requirements barring Vargas from running in the elections.
Angara said it is important to know what the PSC and other agencies under PSC are doing specially that the Congress is now deliberating the sports agency's budget for 2017. (Sunnex)
