(UPDATED) The boyfriend of May Albasin, the lotto caretaker who was murdered and dumped a few meters away from her house in Talisay City, Cebu, admitted to killing her.
Leo Zafra, 76, a local businessman, said, Albasin stole money from him and was planning to leave him for another man.
He did not show remorse for killing her 33-year-old girlfriend.
On Tuesday, September 26, a woman's body was found dumped at a subdivision in Lawaan I, Talisay City. She had gunshot wounds in her abdomen, left thigh and right arm.
On the same day, a closed-circuit television footage was obtained by authorities showing a man taking something out from the passenger seat of a white sports utility vehicle.
Zafra was accused of killing Albasin, by the victim's mother, Remy Albasin Lugan.
Lugan alleged that her daughter was mauled by the man a few days before she died.
But Zafra denied mauling Albasin. He said it was the other way around.
He showed reporters the bruises he received from Albasin just before he shot her.
Authorities caught Zafra on Wednesday, in a checkpoint in Sergio Osmeña Sr. town, Zamboanga del Norte.
Zafra said he fled to Zamboanga del Norte to commit suicide.
Based on police account, Zafra was driving a motorcycle when he was caught Wednesday.
Superintendent Jason Villameter, Talisay City police chief, said the checkpoint personnel asked for Zafra's identification card and confirmed he is the person whom the law enforcers are trying to locate.
Villameter said he had sent a picture of the businessman to the town's police station.
Earlier, Chief Inspector Romar Victoriano Lim, the Sergio Osmeña Sr. town police chief, told SuperVoxPop Cebu that Zafra claimed he was robbed and asked for help from residents in Barangay Venus.
Zafra was then brought to the police station where he yielded an unlicensed .38 revolver. The police then arrested him.
“Initially, mao na nga basis nga ma-hold siya (for carrying unlicensed firearm). Upon interview, (he was) very confusing, makaduda ang story why naabot sa munisipyo. Iyang report nga gi-hold up siya. Walay signs nga na-hold up siya (The interview was very confusing, very dubious on why he reached the municipal building. His report was that he was robbed. But there were no signs),” Lim said.
A team from Talisay City Police Station was dispatched Thursday to fetch Zafra who arrived in Cebu early this morning, Friday.
Zafra is now at the Talisay District Hospital for a medical examination. (JKV/VoxPop Cebu)
