Sky's the limit in Down Hill biking

Published on

THE idiom “sky's the limit” means nothing is impossible. That holds true for the thrilling encounters that await Down Hill (DH) bikers.

Gravity helps as they go down from hills (hence the name), ensuring they gather speed and momentum to reach the finish line. Because gravity propels them forward and faster, maximum adrenaline rush is guaranteed. Yup, there are definitely no limits to adventure here!

Don't be fooled, though. Just because bikers are going down doesn't mean there's no skill or effort involved. In fact, mastery of physics, high levels of concentration, and depth of experience are essential qualities that these bikers should possess to ascertain they don't go flying off their bikes and crashing into oblivion. Moreover, a bike with proper suspension, a sturdy helmet, and a complete set of body armor are also necessary for added precaution.

This coming April 30, the 2nd leg of the Mindanao DH Mountain Bike Series will commence at the Cagayan De Oro City Convention Center in Taguanao. They are calling all adrenaline junkies out there to get their game faces on and join!

Their tag-line “This is where you separate the WiseMen from the BraveMen!” caught my attention. I spoke with one of the event's major sponsors, Renante “Renax” Lim, so he could explain what that means. This guy has been riding since grade school and has never stopped. He is so passionate about biking and has turned it into a rewarding career and business with his shop, the BikeLab.

Renax said that Downhill MTB racing gives the riders track or line choices. Then they follow their chosen path until the finish line.

He added, “The BraveMen line refers to the shortest and fastest track; but, this is risky, gnarly, and full of obstacles. The WiseMen line refers to the longer but safer track. This also requires more time to get to the finish line. The rider is left with the decision which of these 2 lines he wants to take. Of course, he has to finish the track with the least amount of time as possible to win the race.”

With two wheels and potentially dangerous tracks, bikers need to have proper gear in the off chance that they lose their balance.

I asked him about injuries and he replied, “I've had my fair share of them. But considering the period of time I have been riding, the ones I've had were not really bad. But anyone really shouldn't be discouraged after a fall. They only serve to make us all wiser and better riders.”

This biking aficionado also shared that he has never stopped biking since his teens because he loves it.

“I look forward to each ride since every ride is never the same,” he said with enthusiasm.

“Plus there are many bonuses that I get, like I always meet new friends. Biking also brings me to places where I have never been. Most of all, the fun and excitement in every ride is addicting!” Renax added.

He emphasized that riding is essential for its health benefits, and this is something he strongly encourages everyone to do.

“The fun and enjoyment are just a bonus. For me, riding is the best form of exercise and it's therapeutic too! Races are just personal goals for me and a good excuse to go out and practice,” Renax said.

I inquired about a good beginner’s bike, to which he said, “I recommend a Specialized Pitch Comp Entry Level bike for anyone who is going to try cycling. It's cheap and durable and a good brand to begin with.”

Happy cycling!
