Stick fighting in Davao opens Saturday

TOP performers of the 1st Davao Invitational Stick Fighting Tournament that will unfurl tomorrow, Saturday, at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.

Tournament manager Elie Gamboa of Pableo Martial Arts Eskrima Evalution, who was guest during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum on Thursday, July 27, held at The Annex of SM City Davao, said they are looking for promising stick fighters to represent Davao City to several upcoming world tournaments set next year including a world competition in Spain and in the Doce Pares World Competition in Cebu City.

"This will also serve as a training ground for athletes as well as to allow them to compete in a regular basis," Gamboa, who has been organizing arnis events for the youth during his stay with the Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), said.

Gamboa added that it is also to complement the growing sports tourism in the city through inviting teams from other regions.

He, however, expects more teams to join in succeeding months.

Ateneo de Davao University, Precious International School of Davao, Talomo National High School, Duterte National High School, Davao City National High School, Don Enrique National High School, Crossing Bayabas National High School, Tugbok Sped Elementary School, Magallanes Elementary School, Pigcawayan Elementary School, Dapitan Arnis team, Dipolog PhilSci Arnis team and Celso P. Tan Eskrima will field entries in full contact and anyo competitions.

Customized medals and certificates will be given to the winners of the event.
