DAVAO City's very own Rexor Romaquin Tacay advanced to the gold medal round in the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games men's kumite below 67 kilogram event as of Tuesday evening, August 22, after eking out three straight victories in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Tacay, dominated Vietnamese Nguyen Van Nhat, 8-0, in their semifinal match after he also won on the same note opposite Sithapanya Xailuexa of Laos, 8-0, in the quarterfinals.
The Dabawenyo earlier pulled off a 9-1 triumph over a Myanmar entry in the first round.
In a past guesting at the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum, Tacay said he is hungry to win in the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games after their event was scrapped in the Singapore SEA Games in 2015.
"Na skip kasi sa Singapore kaya grabe ang urge namin na maka-medal," Rexor said, adding he will give his best to bring honor to the country.
His elder brother Bern Rexander, who heads the Philippine Karatedo Federation (PKF) in Davao, said Rexor only messaged him but he was not able to talk to him yet.
The elder Tacay, commenting on a Facebook post of Raymond Lee Reyes, said: "I never doubted your abilities. Your time has come Rexor."
Rexor had won several medals in national and international competitions. But coming from a family of karatedo practitioners, he has been lured to the sport at a young age.
