BARANGAY Tabunok will get a new public market in less than two years, as Talisay City officials and stakeholders held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site on Thursday morning, September 8.
Sherwin Echavez, an official of the market vendors’ association, told reporters that they support the administration of Talisay City Mayor Eduardo Gullas Sr.
Echavez also confirmed that he and fellow vendors were consulted by the City Government just before it laid the ground works for the new market.
Echavez said they were thankful to the new administration for finally starting the construction for the P150-million facility.
At 8 a.m. Thursday, September 8, Gullas, city officials and department heads led the groundbreaking ceremony, which was blessed by Msgr. Trinidad Silva, the parish priest of the St. Joseph Parish in Tabunok.
Gullas placed old medals of the Virgin Mary and coins provided by his wife, Norma, on the time capsule that would be buried along with the plans for the new market.
The mayor said that he chose September 8 as a good day to hold the groundbreaking because it is birthday of the Virgin Mary.
It was also the same day that Gullas broke ground for the new Talisay City Hall more than a decade ago.
In an interview with reporters, Gullas said if all goes well, the new public market could be completed within a year and a half.
It will be constructed in two phases. The first phase will involve the construction of two market buildings for the dry goods section, while the second phase will develop the wet market.
