A STRONG finish by Tangub City Central School in the centerpiece events ended Corpus Christi’s sweeping dominance for three-straight years, though the Macasandig-based school still reigned in secondary division of the 2016 Milo Little Olympics Mindanao concluded recently in Cagayan de Oro.
Thus, Tangub and Corpus Christi share the major awards of P40,000 cash each and trophies in elementary and secondary levels in the closing ceremonies set to start 1 p.m. Saturday, October 15, at Limketkai Mall’s Rotonda.
“Tangub delegation failed to do it in a decade-long campaign since 2006. Finally, they made it this year which is a big surprise,” said Megdonio Llamera, the 84-year-old organizer of the long-running Mindanao-wide meet for student-athletes.
The Tangub City bets dominated athletic girls (30 pts), swimming boys and girls (60 pts), apart from picking 10 points in table tennis girls, en route to claiming the overall supremacy in elementary division with a total score of 72 points ahead of second-placer Ateneo de Davao University (67 pts) and third-running Koronadal Southern Elementary School (63 pts).
Last year’s elementary ruler Corpus Christi checked in at fourth with 53.8 points to show.
“We faltered in swimming and athletics, though naka-silver `mi sa basketball (15 pts) and chess (10 pts) which is still a big drop from last year,” said Corpus Christi School sports coordinator Eric Miguel.
The Corpus Christi Knights, however, retained the overall title in secondary category with decent finishes in arnis (15), badminton (15), basketball (15), chess (7), karatedo (10), football (15), gymnastics (15), swimming (10), taekwondo (7), table tennis (15) and volleyball(15) for a total score of 139 points.
Zamboanga del Sur Sports Academy, which upstaged Corpus Christi in basketball final for 25 points and a sweeping performance in athletics boys and girls for 60 points, took the runner-up honor with an aggregate of 117 points.
Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School, which lorded it over in secondary girls chess and scrabble, finished at third with 89.5 points.
Milo sports executive Robbie de Vera will be on hand to grace the culmination rites in the company of Dr. Allan Fernazo, DepEd-Northern Mindanao’s Regional Director IV, who also served as chairman of Milo Little Olympics 2016.
Fernazo will be assisted by Llamera, Kristen Aput, Superintendent Lemuel Gonda and Dr. Raymundo Antolo in giving the cash awards and plaques to the winning schools.
