Things trainers do not want to hear

Published on

GOOD day, all! Today I’m going to be sharing some things gym-goers say that trainers do not want to hear. These could be excuses or myths about training.

u25a0 I will start working out once I lose the weight.

This thought was inspired by a post on Coach Julio Veloso’s wall (head coach of Movement Performance MNL). Some people go into a gym to inquire, then tell a coach that they are going to start working out after they’ve lost weight. Strength training allows a person to gain muscle mass, which helps build active tissue, that then elevates the metabolic rate. The reason we exercise, is not only to lose weight, but to gain the health benefits associated with exercise.

u25a0 For the ladies—I don’t want to build muscle.

I hear this all the time. Women do not have the androgenic or anabolic hormones to build up muscle like men do. Ask any guy how hard it is to build muscle mass. Also, there’s a growing trend for women to work on their strength to look better. Check out Kate Upton’s routines with trainer Ben Bruno.

u25a0 I want to lose weight but I don’t want to diet.

You cannot out-exercise a bad diet. Part of weight loss is nutrition and the other half should be exercise. You can’t really lose weight if you’re still holding on to that Krispy Kreme.

u25a0 I want to train like Lebron James (or insert another athlete), without being as fit and prepared as the said professional athlete.

We see this all the time. Kids wanting to train like the YouTube videos of their idols. What they don’t know is that the two-minute clip was probably preceded by hours and hours of fundamentals. And those things aren’t necessarily sexy enough to be shown on video. And that is where training really lies, doing the things in the dark that put athletes in the light.

u25a0 I want to see these results (without having the discipline to match it).

Coaches are there to guide you, but ultimately you are in control of your fate. In a week, you’re only in the gym 15 hours at the most, but what you do outside the gym determines how well you adapt to your training program.

Hope you all learned something from today’s article. Stay focused and disciplined.
