GOVERNMENT authorities have foiled a bombing attempt by suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits in the island province of Basilan, a police official said Thursday, June 15.
Superintendent Jerome Afuyog, Isabela City Police chief said an improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered around 3 p.m., Thursday, at the entrance of the Chinese cemetery in the village of Lanote, Isabela City, the capital of Basilan.
Afuyog said the IED was discovered when concerned residents reported to patrolling soldiers that a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank was abandoned at the Chinese cemetery.
He said the soldiers immediately requested the assistance of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team when it was discovered that the LPG tank’s content is an IED.
Afuyog said the EOD personnel have defused the IED through disruption procedure.
He said that the IED is an ammonium nitrate fuel oil-type of explosive.
He said they believed the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was behind the bombing attempt to divert the focus of the security forces.
He said the security forces are continuously pursuing the Abu Sayyaf bandits in the hinterlands of the province of Basilan. (VoxPop Philippines)
