“DISABILITY isn’t a hindrance to become an inspiration to Filipinos.”
This was stressed by Melchor Tumbos, chairman of Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled-National Paralympic Committee of the Philippines (PhilSpada-NPC Philippines) in Negros Island Region.
“It’s our utmost joy and pride that Josephine Medina won a bronze medal in Rio Olympics. Her accomplishment is an inspiration to all Filipinos with disabilities,” he said.
He added: “This is a message that we must live on – the fighting spirit we have been nurturing as persons with disabilities (PWDs). It’s simply refusing to succumb to adversities.”
On Monday, the table tennis player captured the Philippines’ first medal in Rio after pulling off an 11-5, 11-6, 11-7 triumph against German Julianne Wolf, the 2015 European Para Championships silver medalist, in the women’s singles Class 8 division.
Medina was also a gold medalist in the 2015 Asean Para Games in Singapore.
Tumbos, who have been actively campaigning for the PWDs’ welfare for decades, called on government officials to focus on the welfare of PWDs.
He reiterated that government should also take into consideration the development and welfare of PWDs as they aim to become inclusive in the society.
