JAPANESE apparel firm, Uniqlo, employed over 100 workers in Mindanao, an official said.

Uniqlo chief operating officer (COO) Katsumi Kubota told VoxPop Davao in a recent interview that apart from expanding its presence in the Philippines by entering Mindanao, they also intend to employ more Filipinos.

He said the 100 employees will be coming from its three branches in the island.

Uniqlo opened its two new branches at SM Lanang Premier and SM City Davao last May 26 and June 2, respectively. Its third store, which will be at SM Cagayan de Oro, will open on June 30. With the three new stores, Uniqlo’s total branches in the country reached a total of 39 stores.

“We are looking forward to bringing our high-quality and innovative LifeWear pieces closer to Dabawenyos and Mindanaoans,” Kubota said.

Uniqlo’s public relations officer Camille Rose Pacis, for her part said, they entered the Mindanao market especially Davao as they recognize the economic growth and potential of the city.

However, Kubota said that they are currently eyeing other expansion areas in Mindanao.

“We will focus first in Davao and Cagayan de Oro,” he said.

The new stores, he said, will offer a full range of LifeWear essentials for men, women, kids and babies. This includes Uniqlo shirts, pants, dresses, proprietary clothing technology products such as AIRism and HEATTECH, as well as Uniqlo sport.

Uniqlo, as a clothing brand, is known globally for its lifewear-innovative, high-quality clothing that is “universal in design and comfort and made for everyone, everywhere.”
