LIKE the human anatomy, society, according to sociologists is composed of different parts performing distinct functions in order to maintain its stability. One among its many specialized parts is the social unit of education.
As a social structure, schools are built not only to hand down to its students the gems of knowledge but also as a socializing agent, which teaches them to emerge as the kind of citizens society expects them to be consistent with the schools’ vision and mission.
Somewhere in the process, conflict can probably arise between the capitalists who own the academic institutions and the bureaucratic employees such as the educators.
Capitalists seek to contain spiralling cost of education while educators struggle to provide the best quality education.
In this tug-of-war, capitalists typically win compromising quality education in the name of profit.
But one man believes otherwise.
He is Dr. Jose Gatino Nacario. As he puts it: “There are principles in leading and managing a school that violates principles of capitalists”.
“Doc Gatieh”, as he is more popularly addressed, is a pure-bred Josenian alumnus having earned his Bachelor in Elementary Education; Master of Arts in Education (major in Elementary Education) and Doctor of Education (major in Instructional System and Resource Management) at the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), the Center of Excellence in Teacher Education in the Central Visayas Region.
As a professional teacher, he started his humbling career as an elementary teacher of USJ-R for 12 years. At the same period, he was the Dance Troupe Choreographer of the said University. After which he became a Faculty member of its College of Education and the Graduate School for Education for the next 3 years.
It was not long before he became the Chairman of the College of Education of USJR for 5 years.
With the goal of polishing further his management and leadership skills, he transferred to St. Paul College Foundation and became its Grade School Principal for 2 years and eventually appointed as the Vice President for Academics for a year.
To date, he is the Vice President for Academic and Faculty Affairs of Southwestern University Phinma since 2014.

As Doc Gatieh climbed the ladder of his career, he has been involved in countless rounds of speakerships and as review center lecturer for the Board Licensure Examinations for Professional Teachers (BLEPT) nationwide. With these experiences, he erected his “Nacario Review Center and Consultancy”.
He has also been invited as Part-time Professor for the Graduate School of Education of Cebu Normal University and the University of San Carlos.
Currently, his credibility has earned him the respect of the academicians that he has become an authority on the following areas:
(1) Pedagogy/Teacher Education (Classroom Management Techniques, Designing Meaningful Learning Plans and Preparing Education Students hurdle licensures);
(2) Human Resource (Coaching and Mentoring Teachers to improve Teaching and Helping Schools develop Effective Evaluation Process);
(3) Specialization (Thematic Curriculum for Kindergarten: An Integrative K-12 Approach, Teaching Folk Dance/ The Folk Dance Curriculum); and
(4) Student Development (Aligning Club Activities to School’s Vision and Mission and How to Organize a Dance Company).
Aside from his educational qualification, Doc Gatieh has been promoting Philippine Dance Culture. He has always been passionate about folk dances and how it helps to preserve the roots and rich history of the Philippines. As an evidence, he was an active officer of the Cebu Chapter of Philippine Folk Dance for 10 years and was its Vice-President for 4 years.
He had likewise done Acting and Stage Play Directing produced by the Arts Council of Cebu. Lastly, he has been a contributing columnist of several news dailies in Cebu City.
His advocacy is to partner with schools in order to fulfill its Mission and Vision through consultancy, trainings and workshops on his areas of expertise.
For Doc Gatieh, “Educator’s principles maybe costly to begin with as it may be a burden to the financial side of the School. However, it may hatch unexpected tremendous return-of-investment.
