Vicente: Who is a fighter?

Published on

WHO is a fighter? If not everyone, then who?

A fighter is someone who dares himself to do what he perceives to be difficult or impossible, contrary to how others perceive a fighter as one who puts up his fists and stands up to a brawl. A fighter needs not to hurt or need not to brawl. A true fighter is someone who brings out the best in him to hurdle the impossible while challenging his capacity, capability, and getting over his fear.

A fighter is a warrior who fights with a purpose particularly in the world of sports.

In the Philippines alone, we have many fighters. Fighters wanting to make it to the top for their family and their future, armed with enormous amount of determination inspiring them to go on and train knowing that it’s the only way to reach the top. Their biggest challenge? Lack of support and attention because they haven’t proven anything yet. This is why they train so hard to make sure they get picked to have the chance to prove themselves.

Philippine sports is just as complicated. Athletes need to hurdle obstacles just to be among the best in their chosen field but the corruption and the politicking is killing the Philippines sports and the Filipino athletes.

This can be attributed to the low performance and medal yield. If only our athletes are given the chance to prove themselves with the proper support they deserve, then performance and medal potentials would change dramatically.

But just like the 2nd Regiment “Bolo Batallion” of the 2nd World War composed of Filipino Fighters who were issued with knives and bolos, our Filipino athletes fight on relentlessly trying hard to gain their place in the sporting world. These athletes are true fighters, warriors at heart, amidst difficulties and sacrifices just to race the proud flag of their beloved country the Philippines.
