BARANGAY 35 Captain Manuel “Maui” Huelar Jr. of Bacolod City was confined at South Bacolod General Hospital (SBGH) on Friday, December 2, after he suffered vomiting inside the custodial facility of Police Station 8.
Before that, Huelar was rushed to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital on Thursday evening after he had an asthma attack, but he was discharged at 2 a.m. the following day.
Senior Inspector Wilfredo Benoman Jr., head of Police Station 8, said Huelar was brought to SGBH past noon on Friday.
He is being guarded by policemen at the hospital while they are waiting for the diagnosis of his medical condition.
Huelar, together with two others, was arrested by agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)-Negros Island Region during a drug bust inside a pension house at Barangay Singcang-Airport in Bacolod on November 28.
He sold a sachet of shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) to a police agent for P500 and also yielded another sachet.
The former star player of Negros Slashers in the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association was charged for violation of Sections 5 and 11 of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
During the raid, Christian Joseph Mijares and Joshua Arroyo were also arrested, and charged for conspiracy and possession of illegal drugs, respectively. However, Arroyo was released for further investigation based on the recommendation of the City Prosecutor’s Office.
PDEA-NIR Regional Director Julius Navales said he is not in favor of placing Huelar under “hospital arrest,” but if the situation calls for it, it could be allowed.
Navales added that if his condition is life-threatening, he will allow it.
