THE City Government of Bacolod on Thursday signified its commitment to plant one million trees in the city.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia, who led the City Development Council Assessment and Evaluation Workshop held at Planta Hotel on Thursday, said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is committed to give one million seedlings for Bacolod.
Leonardia said they need the cooperation of barangay officials to plant the trees within their areas of jurisdiction.
“This is the initiative of the DENR and this will elevate the level of environmental consciousness and awareness, and love for trees (of Bacolodnons). This will protect our environment,” the mayor said.
Several barangay heads have agreed to support the city’s tree-planting program along with the DENR.
Leonardia said the program will include planting trees in vacant areas, including those along the city’s highways which can become a tourist attraction.
The mayor said that by next year, the barangays will start planting seedlings.
He urged the private sector to take part in the program, and also encouraged homeowners who have vacant lots to plant trees.
