THE World War II-era bomb unearthed from a business process outsourcing (BPO) hub in Barangay Apas, Cebu City, was detonated in a mining pit in Barangay Don Andres Soriano, Toledo City yesterday afternoon.
Personnel of the Explosives and Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team led the detonation of the 2,000-pound bomb at 12:45 p.m., said Captain Kelvin Bayaban of Task Force Cebu.
The bomb was brought to the mining site last Wednesday dawn. The detonation was supposed to take place Thursday dawn, but it was moved so village officials can inform residents that a bomb was about to be detonated in the area.
Construction workers found the bomb last Saturday, then it was turned over to the EOD team.
The BPO hub was the site of a military airport before it was taken by Japanese imperial forces in 1942.
American forces bombarded it until they took it back in 1945. Several bombs went unexploded at the time. (KAL/VoxPop Cebu)
