THE number of violence against women (VAW) cases in Bacolod City has dropped, according to the Bacolod City Police Office–Women and Children Protection Desk (BCPO-WCPD).
BCPO-WCPD head Police Inspector Arlyn Torrendon said that from January to February this year, only 15 cases were recorded, compared to 99 cases in the same period last year.
Torrendon cited the dynamic involvement of various Barangay Councils for the Protection of Children (BCPC) for its contribution in the decreased figure of VAW incidences in the city.
“Our BCPC has active and functional Violence Against Women and Their Children (VAWC) desk, which handles problems and gives interventions prior to going to the police,” Torrendon said.
Torrendon, who referred to the barangay officials as well-trained and oriented in handling these cases, likewise lauded them for their partnership with the BCPO-WCPD.
Meanwhile, the BCPO-WCPD, along with its partners, strengthens its VAW advocacy through conduct of information, education and communication campaigns.
Under the Republic Act 9262, also known as Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act of 2004, forms of abuse include physical, sexual psychological and economic.
The law further upholds the protection of family and its members, especially women and children, against violence and threats. (PR)
