THE warden and four personnel of Bago City District Jail in Negros Occidental were relieved from their posts effective January 22 following the death of an inmate last January 18.
Senior Inspector Alexander Sy, jail warden, said Thursday, January 25, that the order came from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Western Visayas last January 22.
Sy was transferred to Negros Occidental District Jail (NODJ), replacing Inspector Jun Carvi Rosales as assistant jail warden. Rosales assumed Sy’s post at the city jail.
Also relieved were Sy’s deputy chief, Senior Jail Officer 1 Hommar Joseph Ginete, and the three jail officers on-duty during the incident.
Ginete and the two jail officers were also transferred to NODJ, while the other one was moved to Sipalay City District Jail.
Sy said his relief was due to command responsibility.
“It is a standard operating procedure in the bureau once an incident occurs inside the jail,” he added.
Last week, Rene Boy Alvarez, 32, of Barangay 4, Himamaylan City, died of intracranial bleeding secondary to head injury due to mauling after he was involved in a commotion.
He had been facing charges for illegal possession of firearms and explosives, attempted murder, and direct assault.
Sy refused to comment on the incident, but he said the BJMP and the police are conducting parallel investigations.
