XAVIER University High School (XUHS) and Angelicum Learning Center (ALC) ruled the 2017 West I District Meet volleyball secondary boys' and girls' tournament on Sunday, September 9, at XUHS covered courts in Cagayan de Oro City.

The Jr. Crusaders upset Angelicum after narrowly prevailing in the deciding set to claim the secondary boys' title.

XUHS and ALC engaged in a seesaw match in their best-of-5 final series that ensued a 2-all deadlock that set the tone for a thrilling tiebreaker.

But, the Jr. Crusaders kept their composure to beat Angelicum, 15-11 that surprisingly played without their multi-titled coach Bong Rameri.

The ALC lady spikers, however, avenged their male counterparts’ heart-breaking loss after beating Liceo de Cagayan University in the final of the secondary girls bracket.

ALC surged to a 2-0 lead in the race-to-three showdown, even as the Liceo Jr. Titans managed to avoid a sweep with a win in the third set.

The ALC spikers had their first stringers Athena Sophia Abbu, Kim Rocha, Ela Raagas, Josephine La Victoria, Micah Daya and Martina Dacer put their acts together as they closed the fourth set for the victory.

ALC also has Karel Millang, Shandara Baba, Maxene Hugo, Princess Manla, Alyssa Baroro, Alex Salvaloza and Marestela Cesar in its winning roster. While Liceo has Eureka Eslapor and the Raagas sisters, Martha and Rea on its side.

Eslapor was once ALC’s prize lady spiker, while the elder Martha was a former member of the University of Science and Technology senior high volleyball girls team.

A week before the west I elimination, Merry Child School lorded over the secondary boys and girls in the West II district volleyball competitions.

Bulua Central School of coach Kokong Pabilona also dominated the boys and girls elementary volleyball.
