ESCALANTE City native James “King James” Yap is excited to join his new team – Rain or Shine (ROS) Elasto Painters when the PBA’s 2016-2017 Season unfolds this coming November 20.
Yap in an interview said that he is happy with his new club and looks forward to play with fellow Negrense Jeff “Negros Sniper” Chan.
“It will be a great experience and I just feel proud to play with a fellow Negrense,” he added.
Yap added that his adjustment in playing with ROS guys is not really that hard because they have the likes of Ronnie Matias and Jewel Ponferada, both his teammates when he was still with Star Hotshots.
“What made the difference is really the system. ROS has a different style of play which I think made it a tough side in the PBA,” said the two-time Most Valuable Player.
Asked if he can bring huge a impact on the team, Yap downplayed expectations.
“I just play my game and follow what coach Caloy (Garcia) tells me to do. I’m not here to ruin anyone’s game but to help the team win matches. This is my new club and I will play my best game,” he added.
Yap averaged 11.9 points per game last season, shooting only 30 percent beyond the arc with 3 boards and 2 assists in 29 games.
He advised young basketball aspirants to stay disciplined, maintain the hard work, and study – both in academics and the sport.
“Basketball now is tough. No easy win. You have to work for it. And, if you fail, don’t give up,” he said.
Yap started his career at Bacolod Tay Tung High School before transferring to Iloilo Central Commercial High School where he was recruited by University of the East.
