THE Zamboanga City Health Office (CHO) has launched an information campaign on iodized salt to instill public awareness on its nutritional value.
City Health Office’ Nutrition Division Chief Virgie Sagrado said the campaign is to motivate the residents, including eatery owners, to use iodized salt.
Sagrado said they initiated the campaign since latest survey showed only 60 percent of the salt being sold in the market is iodized.
Sagrado said the information campaign include the conduct of forum at the markets and the posting of information materials on the use of iodized salt in public places like market, bus terminal and public utility vehicles.
She said the use of iodized salt eliminates if not lessens the Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) among children and adults as well as prevents goiter.
She said lack of iodine causes low intelligence quotient (IQ) and mental retardation among children and may cause harm on pregnant women and the child.
She said they will reactivate the Bantay Asin Task Force to inspect and ensure that salts sold in the market are iodized.
