A PORTION of the flood protection structure being constructed in Barangay Bambang, Candaba town eroded over the weekend.
Responding to Mayor Rene Maglaque's report, Department of Public Works and Highways First District Engineering Office Chief Almer Miranda, together with Board Member Pol Balingit and former board member Nelson Tolentino, conducted an immediate inspection on Sunday, November 29, to check the situation and the integrity of the structure.
Miranda said about 50 meters of the said infrastructure, which is intended to protect the low-lying barangay from the overflow of water in Pampanga River, has collapsed.
"The slope protection sunk possibly due to softening of the soil underneath. We could not identify yet if there was sippage or the rains and flooding that caused the softening of the soil," he said.
Miranda said he ordered the immediate closure of the eroded portion, and repair of the remaining part so it can be passable to light vehicles and pedestrians.
He said that since the structure is still under construction, its repair is still under contractor's warranty.
"They will be cutting the affected portion and reconstruct it but our immediate instruction is to ensure the protection of the community and provide a safe access way to the residents," he said.
