ZAMBOANGA City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar announced Friday, October 5, the increase of allowances for public school teachers from P700 each in 2017 to P1,000 this year, a fitting gift to them on their day.
This means an allocation of P69.996 million for the total 5,833 teachers for 2018 as compared to the P47.409 million allocation for 5,644 teachers in 2017.
Salazar said while the amount was increased to P1,000 per teacher, the number of recipients has also been increased this year to 5,833 as compared to last year's 5,644 teachers.
October 5 is World Teachers' Day and the Department of Education (DepEd) held a whole day event for the teachers at the Mayor Vitaliano Agan Coliseum with Salazar as guest.
The mayor said that increase in allowances forms part of her administration's priority thrust on Security, Health and Education (SHE).
First district Representative Celso Lobregat shared his deep respect and appreciation to all teachers, as they continue to strive for excellence in helping shape their students' lives.
"Teaching is the mother of all profession, without our dear teachers, we are not here in where we are now," Lobregat said.
World Teachers' Day, also known as International Teachers Day, is held annually on October 5.
Established in 1994, it commemorates the signing of the 1966 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization-International Labor Organization recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which is a standard-setting instrument that addresses the status and situations of teachers around the world.
