THE University of the Philippines (UP) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of UP Diliman student, 19-year-old Sophia Marie G. Coquilla, who was found dead in her home in Tagum City on July 9, 2025.
In a statement, the state university described the incident as a “senseless” and “violent act” that cut short the life of a promising young scholar and future leader.
The UP community extended its deepest condolences to Sophia’s family and friends, mourning the loss of a daughter, classmate, friend, and Iskolar ng Bayan.
The university has offered support to Sophia’s grieving family and encouraged students and members of the UP community to access its psychosocial services in light of the tragedy.
UP officials stressed that the incident serves as a stark reminder to remain vigilant in upholding the rights and safety of citizens and called for collective action against violence and impunity. The university urged authorities to carry out a swift, transparent, and thorough investigation and to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“No family should have to endure the anguish of unanswered questions, and no criminal act should remain unpunished,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, Tagum City Mayor Rey T. Uy likewise expressed sorrow over the killing of Sophia, who sustained around 38 stab wounds.
Uy condemned the crime and vowed that the city government would not stop until justice is served and such incidents are prevented in the future.
He also ordered the Davao del Norte Police Provincial Office (DNPPO) to intensify patrols and security operations across the city, urging residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to the police.
On July 10, authorities apprehended two male minors in a nearby boarding house in connection with the killing.
Recovered from their possession were several of Sophia’s personal belongings, including her laptop, iPad, iPhone, watches, and other valuables.
Investigators also confiscated a blood-stained butterfly knife and a kitchen knife believed to have been used in the crime.
The minors have been turned over to the Women and Children Protection Desk, while all evidence is now in the custody of the General Investigation Section.
Police believe at least four suspects were involved, with a manhunt still ongoing for the remaining individuals.
Sophia, also known as “Nicole,” was a graduate of Ateneo de Davao University – Senior High School, where she finished as third honorable mention in 2024. She was remembered as a kind and gentle soul who was deeply loved by her peers. DEF
